I am HELLA excited about my new bike arriving today! I spent some time setting up my workshop for bike assembly. As some of you are aware, I have a very small “shop” in my basement with a really neat workbench. I am constantly organizing and re-organizing because I am a nut job. It has been a while since I’ve posted about it, so allow me to take this opportunity to waste your time with a few pictures.

“Old” Bike for scale

All of the lights and screens are now smart/voice controlled. I’m getting ready to put a new screen in the big workbench. The LCD I’m currently using I tore out of an older laptop so the viewing angle is shit. I have to be standing directly in front of it to see it clearly. The eventual plan is to sink a touch based panel into the surface of the work bench. The small workbench with the bike tools on it is now on casters, which has proven super useful. I’ve finally ditched all of my NiCad batteries and got an adapter to use the Li ones with the older tools. I used a home depot gift card and a kidney to get that 4 pack.

Kinja'd!!!

Doubt I’ll need those wrenches, but the workbench looked like it needed more. I’m planning to switch out the included derailleur and shifter before I even try them.

New “smart” switch for the bench lights and screen.

Kinja'd!!!

A little bit holder for my most commonly used ones. I’m not sure yet how I plan to finish it or where I’m going to mount it.

Kinja'd!!!

A little stool I threw together for my little girl so she can reach everything in her kitchen and climb inside her toybox. Using a router is so satisfying.

Kinja'd!!!

I was going to practice “joining” wood for this little project, but I got impatient.

Your shop is inspiring. My garage space  is more of a wasteland with disorganized tools, spare supplies everywhere, and other junk that typically fills a garage.

What bike stand is that? Do you like it? I’m looking for one that will hold a 30 pound bike.

The motivation to organize is high when space is at a premium. To this day I cannot believe that me, a born car addict bought my first house sans garage.

It is whatever one was popular and cheap on amazon around this time last year, haha. I can’t find the exact one but the link below is nearly the same. The bike pictured is 30 lbs. However for cheap, heavy bikes I have had to anchor the opposite side into a piece of wood so I could add weight to counter balance. I have since routed out slots in the baseboard in my shop that the stand can slide underneath to support the weight of heavier bikes.

And yes I have been pretty happy with it. I have never used the wheel stop thing and I have since removed the tool tray as it’s basically useless and kind of gets in the way.

Yes!!! I’m stoked for you! You’re going to love the jeffsy.

I should have one of my winter bike projects wrapped up today. I have the front wheel bearings soaking and then just need to reassemble and get the cockpit area a set up when it’s off the stand. You’re shop area is a thousand times cleaner than my current explosion in the corner of the basement

OCD / Organization FTW! I need to get back out to my garage and tidy things up, ideally getting some of the wheels/tires off the ground and adding a bench. Space  was unfinished as of last summer so insulation + drywall was the main hurdle.

I am so pumped! My co worker’s already arrived!! I should have thought to order it to work as residential deliveries usually don’t happen until the evening.

If it works, it works! I like that stand.  W ay to use geometry/logic there, designers. I used a reciprocating saw to mill out two slots in the baseboard so I can tuck the back two legs of my stand underneath it so bikes don’t fall over.

Insulation is great though, it makes just a garage into a “work area”. However insulation is WAY more expensive then I ever thought it could be, haha . I just did the outer facing top of my basement and spent a few hundred dollars! I cannot flipping wait until I have a garage in my life.

Sweet shop setup. Now I’m curious what other oppos do for their shop/bike repair setup. I might post mine up sometime soon!

Similarly, I cannot fathom how we bought this house without a garage - it was the only one we looked at without one, because the location was so good. I really regret not acting sooner on a garage, because now a) kids and b) we’re buying land adjacent to ours, so our garage fund has taken a hit you might say.

In any case, I, too, have a tiny workspace in the basement but it’s ... organized... nothing like yours but it’s functional and I’m particular about putting things away all the time because there’s no room not to do that. I’ve probably mentioned it before, but my workbench is an old bathroom vanity on casters and my favorite power tool, the sliding compound miter saw, is also mounted to an old bathroom vanity on casters. This allows flexibility when I have larger items that need to span the two benches, or to move the saw bench for longer pieces. I can also unscrew it from the bench and take it outside, but I rarely do that.

Also, how are your tools so clean?!

Anyway. Congrats on the new bike!

I had a system for cutting inside, but the room is just too small for all of the dust. Now I have my table saw hanging on the wall by the back door and two really nice collapsible saw horses. So I have a outdoor workshop that I can throw up in a few minutes.

We’re almost certainly going to move in the near future. My wife needs more space for plants and animals, so it makes no sense to add on where we are.

Regarding the clean tools, I usually clean them after use. Definitely if they were used on the cars. I also have an aversion to using my really nice tools...I know crazy shit, I have to coach myself out of it. I have two other nearly complete sets of tools, a “ beater set” , and a “travel” set. I usually only break out the nice tools when I’m working on either Bimmer or something else that I want to be delicate with. The torque I put on the snap-on tools can be measured in mouse farts, I save the UGGADUGGAS for the Husky stuff.

Ohh can’t wait to see it. Do you have a shock pump or does the bike come with one?

That’s nice of them, a decent shock pump costs a few dollars.

I thought so too. I’m sure I could go buy one but wasn’t looking to spend another $70+

Park tool makes some great stuff. I got this for fairly cheap at a second hand sports store

Nice. Might pick up a used Marlin 5 off CL this weekend because I’m a poor.

A Marlin is what I went into the shop wanting. A lot more money than I wanted to spend later I left with the X Cal. Not sure it was the right move as I crashed a lot my first two seasons and broke a lot of stuff on the bike.

When we built our house the builder thought I was weird to get a 240V line installed along with garage insulation and enough overhead lights to forget that it is night time.

240V is the bane of my existence. We only have 120V, and somebody buried ground cable, not conduit - no cheap way to upgrade it. So I bundle up and use a small space heater, may invest in a propane torpedo.

Yeah, I’m just getting back into biking, and will be using it to commute a lot. Trying to pick up a lightly used one for $300.

50A 240V. I haven’t used it yet, but one day I will and then I’ll be really happy, or the next owner will be.
